Balustrades are the overal term for handrail parts
September 30, 2009 5:13 am HomeThe “Going” is the horizontal distance from the front edge of one tread to the front edge of the tread above/below. There can also be an overall going, which is the sum of the entire tread goings added together. The Handrail, Newel Posts and Spindles of a staircase are designated by the “Balustrades“. A few additional posts in between to support the handrail are likely to be at the beginning and end of a staircase which is the Newel post. The “Spindles” are smaller posts that run from the handrail to the treads. It is typically vertical but it can also be horizontal. Cantilevered stairs may have one or none stringers which is a large solid that runs along the sides of each tread, connecting them all together. Lastly “Winders” are treads which form the turn of staircase; they are angled treads, typically forming 20-30 degrees of a turn. Even though there are more technical ideas about staircase, with this little knowledge of dimensions and terms, looking for a staircase isn’t an obstacle anymore but a fun thing to do.
